Assessment Information

ACCESS for ELLs® stands for Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State for English Language Learners and is designed to measure English language proficiency. It is a large-scale test that addresses the World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) Consortium’s English Language Proficiency Standards that form the core of Wisconsin’s approach to instructing and testing English language learners.

Badger Exam 3-8
The Badger Exam 3-8 is an online, balanced assessment system based on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). These assessments include (summative, benchmark, and formative) that provide meaningful data that educators can use to make sure students graduate from high school ready for college and careers. 

In 2014-15, students, regardless of disability, language, or subgroup status, will now have the opportunity to learn valuable content, and then demonstrate a variety of ways to show what they know and can do.

Forward Exam 3-8
During the 2015-16 school year, Wisconsin rolled out a new assessment called the Wisconsin Forward Exam. The Exam is designed to gauge how well students are doing in relation to the Wisconsin Academic Standards.  These standards outline what students should know and be able to do in order to be college and career ready. The Forward Exam is administered online in the spring of each school year at:

  • grades 3-8 in English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics,
  • grades 4 and 8 in Science and,
  • grades 4, 8, and 10 in Social Studies.

Accommodations and supports for students with disabilities and/or English language learners are built into the system so that the progress of students can be accurately measured.

The Forward Exam is a high quality, research-based, and affordable assessment that meets Wisconsin’s expectations. It is a customized assessment with innovative item types that includes test items reviewed and approved by Wisconsin educators.

MAP (Measures of Academic Progress)
The MAP test is an adaptive, computerized assessment offered in reading, language usage and math.

Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS)
The Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening is a research based screening, diagnostic, and progress monitoring tool.  Wisconsin teachers use PALS to identify students at risk of developing reading difficulties, diagnose students' knowledge of literacy fundamentals, monitor progress, and plan instruction that targets students' needs.  Student data collected from PALS provides a direct means of matching literacy instruction to specific literacy needs.

Report Cards - District and State
As part of the state accountability system, reflected in Wisconsin’s approved ESEA Flexibility Request, the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) produces report cards for every district and school in Wisconsin.

Six Traits Writing

Terra Nova InView
The InView test is a norm-referenced assessment of reading, language and math that's administered to students in grade 2.

Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam (WKCE):
The Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Examination (WKCE) is customized to measure the Wisconsin Model Academic Standards (WMAS) and is developed and designed by the Department of Public Instruction and Wisconsin educators in conjunction with CTB/McGraw-Hill. This standardized test is composed of items specifically designed for Wisconsin and a few commercially developed questions used in schools across the country. Students in grades 3, 5, 6, and 7 take tests in Reading and Mathematics. Students in grades 4, 8, and 10 take tests in Reading, Mathematics, Science, Language Arts, Writing, and Social Studies. WKCE is administered to all the students enrolled in Wisconsin public schools during the fall of each school year.

WISEdash (Wisconsin Information System for Education)
WISEdash is a data portal that uses "dashboards" or visual collections of graphs and tables, to provide multi-year education data about Wisconsin schools.
